Abstract

ENGLISH:
This research was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the Monopoly Game in improving students’ writing skills, particularly in writing recount text, at the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Payung. This study was categorized as an experimental research, specifically a pre-experimental design, using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample of this research consisted of one class comprising 22 students, selected through total sampling technique. The research procedures included administering a pre-test to measure the students’ initial writing ability, implementing the Monopoly Game as the teaching treatment for several meetings, and conducting a post-test to measure students’ improvement after the treatment. The data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test to determine whether there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results. The findings revealed that the mean score of the post-test was higher than that of the pre-test, indicating an improvement in students’ writing performance. The result of the paired sample t-test showed that the significance value was lower than 0.05, which means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. This indicates that the implementation of the Monopoly Game significantly improved students’ writing skills. In conclusion, the Monopoly Game is effective as an instructional strategy to enhance students’ writing ability, especially in developing recount text.
