Abstract
ENGLISH:
The objective of the research were; to find out the challenges encountered by tenth grade students in English pronunciation at MAN 1 Pangkalpinang; was there any significance correlation between students challenges and self-confidence in English pronunciation at MAN 1 Pangkalpinang. The researcher used quantitative approach focusing on correlational research. The total samples were 70 students of MAN 1 Pangkalpinang.
Based on the results of the analysis there were two findings. First, it was found that there were three main challenges in English pronunciation were anxiety is the challenge with the highest percentage of 58.57%, followed by shyness with a medium percentage of about 21.43% and lack of motivation with the lowest percentage of about 20%. Second, Based on the result of statistical analysis of students' on their pronunciation ability by using Pearson Product Moment Coefficient, it was found that the challenges in English pronunciation influenced their self-confidence around 38%, meanwhile 62% comes from other factors.
There was a significant correlation between the challenges in English pronunciation towards students’ self-confidence of tenth grade at MAN 1 Pangkalpinang because r-value > r-table. The researcher suggested the teacher should be more active and give more encouragement to students besides transferring knowledge. It is important to create or apply new teaching methods to improve students' confidence in pronunciation and motivation in learning English.
