Abstract
ENGLISH:
This study examined the effectiveness of the BBC Learning English (6 Minute English) application in improving the listening comprehension of eleventh-grade students at SMK N 1 Parittiga. A quasi-experimental method with a pre-test–post-test control-group design was employed. The participants consisted of 70 students divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group learned listening through BBC 6 Minute English, while the control group received conventional instruction. Listening comprehension tests were administered before and after the treatment, and the data were analyzed using SPSS version 22. The Shapiro–Wilk test showed that all data were normally distributed (p > .05). The experimental group's mean score increased from 44.89 in the pre-test to 82.77 in the post-test, while the control group's mean score improved from 43.08 to 58.89. Paired-samples t-tests indicated significant improvement in both groups (experimental: t = -29.053, p < .001; control: t = -17.622, p < .001). The independent-samples t-test on the pre-test showed no significant difference between the groups (t = 1.026 < t-table = 1.995), confirming that they had similar initial listening ability. However, the post-test results revealed a significant difference (t= 13.732 > t-table = 1.995, p < .001), indicating that the experimental group performed significantly better than the control group. Based on these findings the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted.
It can be concluded that the BBC Learning English (6 Minute English) application is an effective tool for enhancing students' listening comprehension and is more effective than conventional teaching methods.
