Abstract

ENGLISH:
This study aims to find out the kinds of media used by the teacher in teaching English and the students' perception of the media used by the teacher in teaching English at SMPN 2 Koba. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method and data collection was based on observation, questionnaire and interview. The observation was used to observe the process of learning English in class, the questionnaire was used to determine students' perception of the media used by teachers in teaching English at SMPN 2 Koba, and the interview was used to support the results of the questionnaires. The samples of this study were students of class VII and VIII, totaling 123 students.

The findings of this research showed that the kinds of media used by the teacher when teaching English were video, song, PowerPoint, speaker, picture, and flashcard. The result of the questionnaire showed that students' perceptions of the media used by the teacher in teaching English at SMP Negeri 2 Koba are 52 students (42,28%) had positive perceptions and 71 students (57,72%) had negative perceptions.

So, it can be concluded that most of the students gave a negative perception with a percentage of 57,72% toward the media used by the English teacher in teaching English. Students gave a negative perception of the media used by the teacher in teaching English because the students preferred to do a lot of activities such as playing games, so they can playing while learn. The students felt sleepy while learning process so they paid less attention to the teacher so they were still confused about the material presented. The students did not like English and they also thought that English was difficult.
