Abstract
ENGLISH:
This study investigated the correlation between social media consumption patterns and English reading skill of the eleventh-grade students at MAN 1 Pangkalpinang. The objectives of this research were to identify the students’ social media consumption patterns, determine their English reading skill, and examine whether there was a significant correlation between the two variables. This study employed a quantitative correlational research design. The population consisted of 360 eleventh-grade students, and 190 students were selected as the sample using random sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire on social media consumption patterns and a reading comprehension test. The findings revealed that the majority of students (51.58%) were categorized in the habitual level of social media consumption, while 29.47% were in the active category and 18.95% were in the passive category. Regarding English reading skill, 57.89% of the students were categorized as medium, 28.42% as high, and 13.68% as low. The result of the Pearson Product-Moment correlation analysis showed that the correlation coefficient was r = 0.991 with a significance value of p < 0.01,
indicating a positive and very strong correlation between social media consumption patterns and English reading skill. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted, and the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected. It can be concluded that students who demonstrate more constructive and systematic social media consumption patterns tend to have better English reading skill.
