Abstract
INDONESIA:
The goal of this study was to discover a significant difference between students of the eleventh grade at MA AL Muhajirin Koba who got treatments by using Humor Stories and those who were not. It also wanted to discover whether humor stories could effect students in improving their reading skill. This study used quasi-experimental design which is part of quantitative method. This study was conducted at MA AL Muhairin Koba. The population was eleventh grade that consisted of two classes, namely XI A and XI B. There were 42 students as the sample from both of classes: 22 students for the experimental group and 20 students for the control group. In this study, the technique of sampling that researcher used was non-probability sampling more specifically used saturation sampling. Three areas of this study's scope were restricted: finding out the main idea, vocabulary knowledge, and to making inferences. The researcher used pre-test and post-test procedures to assess students’ reading skills. SPSS 26 was used to analyze the test. The research found the experimental and control groups' mean post-test scores differed by 6.577, with a standard error of 4.196, according to the results of the independent sample t-test. 0.215 was the two-tailed significance value, the t there were 40 degrees of freedom and the value was 1.567. Because the significant (t-tailed) is 0.215 higher than the calculation with a significant level of 0.05, and the t result of 1.567 is lower than the critical value of the t-table 1.685. The paired sample t-test did not show a significant improvement (p > 0.05). Although the independent t-test did not show a significant difference between classes, the experimental group’s higher gain indicated the practical effectiveness of humorous stories. In conclusion, humorous stories are an effective and engaging way to improve students’ reading comprehension.
