Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the implementation of the Auction Grammar Game in teaching the Simple Present Tense and to determine whether there was a significant difference in students’ understanding between students taught using the game and those taught without it. Limited to main verb and verb to be especially to affirmative, negative, informative and descriptive text. This study employed a quantitative quasi-experimental design involving 50 seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Puding Besar, consisting of 25 students in the experimental class and 25 students in the control class. The data were collected through observation, pre-test, post-test, and documentation. The data of pre-test and post-test were analyzed using SPSS. The observation results showed that the Auction Grammar Game could provide students with opportunities to practice grammar through sentence analysis, discussion, decision-making, and bidding activities. The experimental class mean score increased from 31.08 in the pre-test to 58.80 in the post-test, while the control class increased from 33.80 to 48.56. The Independent Samples T-Test showed that the t-obtained (3.717) was higher than the t-table (2.011) and the significance value was 0.001 < 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected. It can be concluded that the Auction Grammar Game was a useful instructional strategy for teaching the Simple Present Tense and that there was a statistically significant difference between the students taught using the game and those taught without it.
